Overcoming Uneven Hair

There are countless factors to consider when dealing with uneven hair growth. Diet, medical and proper hair care concerns are typically at the root of hair growth issues. This condition is quite common.

An improper diet often is the cause of insufficient hair growth. The hair, just like the rest of the body, needs a nutritious diet to grow and sustain itself. B vitamins, protein, calcium and iron help grow healthy hair. Leafy green vegetables, dried fruit, cherry juice and beans are good sources of minerals. Fatty, sugary foods should be avoided.

The best thing you can do is handle your hair as little as possible. Use a wide tooth comb with smooth teeth when you work with your hair and don't pull it into tight styles.
A large majority of black women choose to get relaxers instead of wearing their natural hair. Relaxed hair seems more manageable because the hair becomes easier to comb. Plus, achieving a sleek, straight hairstyle is much easier with relaxed hair. However, repeated chemical treatments will cause damage on any hair type.
Back in the day, pressing combs and stove irons were the only tools that got hot enough to straighten African American hair. Now, high-powered blow dryers and flat irons are often used to achieve the "silky straight" look. Heat styling seems harmless, but when done improperly, it will lead to breakage.
The first sign that natural hair has suffered damage from heat is the loss of curl. Natural hair that begins to have an uneven texture (coily, wavy, and straight hair all on the same head) is significantly weakened and on the way to splits and/or breakage.

When relaxed hair is heat damaged, breakage happens more quickly. Many women who complain of slow hair growth may have chemically-treated, heat damaged hair. In reality, the hair is growing, but it's breaking at the same rate. An inch gained at the root, an inch lost at the end, perpetually keeps damaged hair the same length.

Here are some natural goodies for uneven hair, in addition to a balanced PLANT based diet, packed with fruits and veggies:

  • Rosemary oil – Rosemary oil has been used for centuries to help both stimulate hair growth as well as act as preventative method for hair loss. This oil is typically used by adding a few drops to shampoos, conditioners, lotions and rinses.
  • Jamaican black castor oil – Jamaican black castor oil has been used for thousands of years to enhance your overall hair growth. This oil can be used with all different hair types by massaging a few drops each day on the part of the scalp that needs to be growing appropriately.
